Getting Started & Anticipated Challenges

Staying with a regular fitness program isn’t easy, and is especially difficult if you are in pain. To begin with, there are so many potential obstacles that you might face – like time, boredom, and self-confidence. But in Yoga, our practice involves learning how to deal with these issues so they do not prevent you from just getting to your mat (even if it is for just 5 minutes).

I Don’t Have Time to Practice

The ideal time to practice is first thing in the morning. Schedule your yoga practice as you would schedule an important  appointment, and make sure your friends and family are aware of your commitment. Ask for their encouragement and support. There is a wonderful story about a man who returns home after a hard day’s work, only to find that his 8-year-old son insists on playing with him. All the man wants to do is read his newspaper. While he is reading, he notices a picture of the world and knowing that his son is excellent at puzzles, he shows him the picture and precedes to tear it up into hundreds of pieces. Miraculously his son returns within 10 minutes with the entire world put back together. His father is speechless. He asks his son how he did it so quickly. His son responds that while his father was looking at the picture of the world, he noticed the picture of a person on the other side. So, his son put the person together first, and then the world came together. The point of this story is that we must take care of ourselves first, before we set out into the world. Eventually towards the end of the course you will start to learn how to take your yoga with you throughout the day.

I Think Exercise is Boring

It’s natural to grow weary of a repetitive workout day after day, but yoga is very different. It not only involves physical movement, but also mental focus. It is like when athletes say when they’ve performed at their best, that they were in the “zone.” The zone is a state of focus when your mind’s attention is absorbed in the present, so you will more likely stay interested. In Yoga, we link awareness to the flow of the breath through our natural ability to deepen our inhalation and lengthen our exhalation. Then we link the flow of our breath to our awareness of our spine moving.

I’m Self-Conscious About How I Look

What is great is that you will learn a program that you can do at home. As you begin to feel better about yourself, your self-confidence will improve and you can then consider joining classes knowing most importantly…what you should not do.

When Tired, use a Program that Will Prepare You for Sleep or Give You More Energy

We know now through numerous studies that no exercise after work affects sleep patterns. Without exercise, you have no energy. It’s a vicious cycle. Breaking this cycle with physical activity is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. Remember that the price of discipline is always less than the pain of regret. If the mere thought of a morning jog makes you tired, consider several ideas to get moving. Set realistic expectations. If you set your goals too high, you might give up without even trying. Start with a walk around the block. Don’t give up if you feel worn out. Take another walk around the block tomorrow. Keep it up, and eventually you’ll no longer feel worn out.
